Aurangabad is an Indian city in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. The city is named after Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It was called Fatehpur before it took its present name. There are many historical monuments. Aurangabad city is founded by Aurangzeb. It is bordered by the districts of Nashik to the west, Jalgaon to the north, Jalna to the east, and Ahmednagar to the south.  The city is located mainly in the Godavari River Basin and partly in the Tapi River Basin.

Aurangabad is the 5th largest city in Maharashtra.  The city is gateway to the World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora caves. The city is a tourism hub. Aurangabad is titled "The City of Gates".
