Kannur town, formerly known as Cannanore, is a town and the administrative headquarters of Kannur District. Kannur City is a part of the Kannur town. This area was the actual downtown in the olden times but is now mostly a residential area. Kannur District is one of the 14 districts in the state of Kerala, India. The town of Kannur is the district headquarters and gives the district its name. The old name Cannanore is the anglicised form of the Malayalam name Kannur. Kannur district is bounded by Kasaragod District to the north, Kozhikode district to the south and Wayanad District to the southeast. To the east the district is bounded by the Western Ghats, which forms the border with the state of Karnataka . The Arabian Sea lies to the west. Kannur District is known as the land of looms and lores, because of the loom industries and festivals held in temples. The district is a major centre of Theyyam, a ritual dance of northern Kerala. Small shrines known as kavus associated with the Theyyam dot the district.

How to reach
By Road :- Kannur is on National Highway 66 between Kozhikode and Mangalore. The highway is scheduled to be expanded to four lanes soon. A bypass for Kannur city is also proposed under the NH windening project. Kannur is connected to Kodagu , Mysore, and Banglore in Karnataka through the Thalassery – Coorg - Mysore interstate highway.
By Rail :- Kannur Railway Station is one of the major railway stations of the southern railway, under the jurisdication of the Palakkad division. All trains including the Thiruvanathapuram Rajdhani Express and Kochuveli Garib Rath atop at Kannur. Six daily trains around 15 weekly or bi weekly trains connect Kannur to the capital .
