Raebareli is the administrative headquarters of Raebareli district.  Raebareli is a city and situated at the bank of the Sai River. Raebareli located in the heartland of the famous Awadh region which was the part of ancient Koshal  kingdom. Tradition has it that the town was founded by the Bhars and known as Barauli. Over the course of time, the name was change to Bareli. The prefix “Rae” represent “Rai” the common title of the kayasths and manihar who were masters of the town for a considerable period of time, some famous kayasths are  Kali sahay, Dr. Shankar Dayal Rai and etc.
